Can you trust Greek?

I just received this question from one of this blog’s readers. Since I’ve never been asked this before, and found it to be an interesting one, I thought I’d answer it on the blog.

Shalom,

My husband has been questioning why you have been using Greek explanations when he thought we were doing everything Hebrew.

Or can you give him an explanation as to why sometimes you use the greek meanings to words in the NT and sometimes you also give a hebrew meaning to words in the NT?

First, I’d like to address a common misconception among some folks who are new to the Hebrew roots movement. Some thing there is something wrong or evil with the Greek language. If so, then why did YHVH allow the Testimony of Yeshua (New Testament) to come down to us in the Greek language? Obviously, he didn’t think it was evil.

Second, why do I use definitions to Greek words when teaching from the Testimony? Simply this, all we have is Greek. We don’t have the Testimony in Hebrew. I can’t give a definition in Hebrew when all we have is the Greek.

Some Bible teachers will go back into the Septuagint (LXX) translation of the Hebrew language Tanakh (Old Testament) translated into Greek more than a couple hundred before the birth of Yeshua to try to figure out what words in the Greek Testimony of Yeshua might be the same as the Greek words in the LXX, and then go from there back to Hebrew. The problem with this is that it’s usually a guess as to a Greek word’s potential meaning. The problem is that the LXX translators lived hundreds of years before the Testimony of Yeshua writers, and languages evolve and some word meanings change over the centuries, so one has to be careful when doing this. Colloquial expressions and figures of speech also change with time. Many times we don’t know what Hebrew word is behind the Greek word in the Testimony even with the LXX available to us.

For these reasons, I primarily stick with the Greek language and word definitions when teaching from the Testimony because that’s all I can do. I have no other choices.

I can go to the Aramaic language New Testament Peshitta, but most of us don’t know how to read Aramaic, and I’m not aware of any Aramaic lexicons or word dictionaries. So we’re still stuck with the Greek.

Having said all this, it is my belief that some if not much of the Testimony of Yeshua was written originally either in Hebrew or Aramaic. This, however, is hard to prove since we don’t have any autographs in Hebrew, and the there’s a debate raging alone scholars about the age and the origin of the Aramaic texts, so their reliability has been called into question. Nonetheless, the Testimony writers were probably all Jewish, knew Hebrew and/or Aramaic and thought and wrote using Hebraic thought patterns (as opposed to Greek) and Hebraic terms and idioms. Knowing this is essential when reading and trying to understand the Testimony.

In summary,we do our best to understand the Testimony of Yeshua from a Hebraic perspective, even though we only have the Greek language to work from. This isn’t always easy to do, and it’s sometimes easy to add two and two and get five. This is why we have to be so careful when handling the Word of Elohim, so that we don’t make it say something that it didn’t mean.

Thankfully, Yeshua sent us his Holy Spirit who he promised would guide us, convict us of sin and lead us into all truth (John 16:5–15). I believe that if a person is Spirit-filled and Spirit-led, and wants to serve and obey YHVH unconditionally, that the true meaning and intent of a scriptural passage will be revealed to the person regardless of the language it was written in.

What Is Sin & Keys to Overcoming It

What is the Biblical definition of sin? You need to know this, so you will know what to do and what not to do. Most churches don’t teach what sin really is according to the Bible. After you know this, then what are some practical steps to overcoming sin? The answers are in this video.

Islam and the Modern “Progressive” Movement

The so-called “progressive” liberal philosophical (called Progressivism) movement in the U.S. and other Western nations, broadly speaking, has one thing in common with Islam: they both hate YHVH Elohim — the God of the Bible — and those who follow and teach His word, the Bible. Many “progressives” and Koran-adherent Islamists or Moslems are currently waging an all-out war against Elohim’s people all over the world. Though they are two different ideological groups and are not formally united, they’re united in that they have a common enemy. The spiritual force driving both of them is Satan the devil, the god of this world, who is behind the spirit of Antichrist, which both “progressives” and Koran-adherent Moslems, by their actions and philosophies, advocate and are aggressively promoting globally.

Devil 32200902

Presently in Africa, the Middle East and Near East, Koran-adherent Moslems are persecuting, enslaving, raping, exiling, stealing property from and genocidally exterminating Christians and Jews as per the instructions of the Koran. Concurrently, the “progressives” in America and the West are doing the same thing, but in a different way. “Progressives” are using the political parties, judicial systems, educational systems, the media and the entertainments industries they control to exile or exterminate Christians from the marketplace, political arena, the media, educational systems and the entertainment industry. “Progressives” are murdering Bible-followers verbally through every media and electronic mouthpiece available to them. Like their Muslim counterparts, they are using a corrupt court system, a wicked political establishment and any other means available to them to deprive Christians of liberty, property, and to “rape” them economically by depriving them of the freedom to run their own commercial enterprises as their biblically-ordered conscience dictates and to openly and freely practice their religion in the public square and even, at times, to freely preach or communicate Bible truth.

Although most so-called “progressives” won’t come out openly in favor of Islam, they nonetheless share the same hatred of Christians as do Koran-adherent Moslems, and “progressives” are doing everything possible to promote the Islamization of our government, schools and other social institutions at the expense of our traditional Judeo-Christians biblical values.

With regard to the agenda that “progressives” and Moslems share, the oft-heard adage, “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” comes to mind. In this case, both groups hate YHVH Elohim, His Bible and His followers. This then unites them, de facto, as allies, which goes a long way to explaining the “progressives’” aggressive promotion of Islam in America and other Western nations, and their turning a blind eye toward the atrocities Moslems are committing against Christians and Jews worldwide. It’s not that the “progressives” love Islam; it’s that they hate the Bible so much that they’re willing to form an uneasy, philosophical alliance of sorts with Islam to help them rid the planet of the Bible and its followers.

Make no mistake about it, Satan the devil, YHVH Elohim’s archenemy, is behind it all, and he is the ultimate enemy of Bible followers. Thankfully, the devil has already been defeated by Yeshua’s victory over sin, death and the grave (1 Cor 15:55–58), and he’s simply living on borrowed time until Yeshua returns to finalize his victory over him and banish him for good (Rev 20:1–3; 7–10). Until then, the lovers of biblical truth and freedom must stand firm and united against Satan and his earthy minions (Eph 6:10–18; 2 Cor 10:4–6) in the name of Yeshua and through His blood (Rev 12:11; Luke 10:19; Rom 16:20).

I leave you with this exhortative question from the Book of Psalms —

Who will rise up for me against the evildoers? Who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity? (Psalm 94:16

Was Peter a pork eater?

Acts 10:13–15, In Peter’s vision of the sheet covered with unclean animals, the voice from heaven commanded him three times to kill and eat these unclean animals. Peter was confused by the meaning of this vision since being a Torah-law abiding Jew he knew that eating unclean meat was forbidden and in good conscience he could not do that which was contrary to YHVH’s Torah-law, for to do so was sin (sin is the violation of the law, 1 John 3:4).

Often visions are metaphorical in nature and not literal. There are many examples in the Scriptures of people receiving metaphorical visions. For example, read the books of Daniel and Revelation. Indeed, Peter’s vision was no exception, for no sooner had the vision ended when three Gentile men appeared at his door seeking the gospel message and the Spirit of Elohim bade Peter to go and to meet them. Peter then realized that the interpretation of his vision was that he should not call any man common or unclean; that is, the gospel message is for all people regardless of their ethnicity (verse 28). In Peter’s case, Bible itself interprets his vision. The issue is not about whether it is now permissible to eat non-kosher meat or not, but rather the Spirit of Elohim was directing the apostles to begin taking the gospel to the Gentiles, who by Jewish standards were considered common and unclean (verse 28).

Now consider this. If Yeshua had meant to say in Matthew 15:11 and Mark 7:18–19 that it was now permissible to eat all foods including those meats that the Torah prohibits to be eaten (e.g., pork, shellfish, etc.), presumably Peter would have known this, since he was present when Yeshua made the statement (see Matt 15:15). If Peter knew that Yeshua had given the okay for his disciples now to eat unclean meat, why then did Peter so strongly object when the voice from heaven commanded him to eat the unclean animals in the vision (Acts 10:13–14)? Obviously, Peter had not changed his opinion about not eating unclean meat, since Yeshua had never annulled the Torah command forbidding the eating of unclean meats in the first place.

Is YOUR belly your god, or is Elohim your God?

Leviticus 11:1–47, Let’s briefly discuss the subject of clean and unclean meats. The focal point of biblical dietary laws are holiness and separation. There are other issues here that need to be explored as well. How serious are you about obedience to YHVH’s commands, or is your belly your god? (See Phil 3:19; Rom 16:18.) Do your taste buds or the Word of YHVH rule your life? Remember, Torah covers all aspects of life: physical, spiritual, emotional, relational, civil, agricultural, political, jurisprudence, religious, and economic. Torah is a very holistic handbook on life. Are you one who takes the (humanistic) pick-and-choose approach to Torah-obedience? “I’ll obey only the biblical laws that suit me.” Such an approach is akin to what the serpent told Adam and Eve when he said, “You can have it your way … YHVH didn’t really mean what he said when it comes to obedience.”

Really now!

Really now!

The biblical kosher laws involve many areas such as health issues, holiness (not defiling the body, the temple of YHVH’s Set-Apart Spirit), and separation issues— how we’re to act, live, eat, worship, think, dress and talk differently than the heathens around us. The word kosher derives from the Hebrew word kasher/RAF (Strong’s H3787) meaning “to be straight, right, acceptable” (see Est 8:5; Eccl 11:6; 10:10). YHVH has called his people out of this world and sanctified (set-apart) them to be “straight, right and acceptable” to him. Therefore, YHVH hasn’t give us the liberty to act, speak, dress, eat and live the way the heathens do. He has called us to a higher standard. We can’t expect to be called the children of the Most High, and still live like the children of the world. We must choose whom we are going to serve (see Josh 24:15): YHVH or mammon and this world (Matt 6:24).

Leviticus 11:4, 47, Unclean. The word unclean is the Hebrew word tameh meaning “defiled, impure, polluted ethically, ritually or religiously” and the word clean is the Hebrew word tahor meaning “pure physically, ceremonially, morally, ethically.” In verse 43, YHVH says that in eating unclean meats one becomes abominable (or detestable, filthy). In Ezekiel 22:26, YHVH rebukes his people because, “Her priests have violated my Torah-law, and have profaned my set-apart (Heb. kadosh) things: they have put no difference between the set-apart and profane, polluted or common, neither have they shown difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.” In Leviticus 11:45, the Torah states, “For I am YHVH that brought you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your Elohim. You shall therefore be set apart, for I am set apart/holy.”

In 2 Corinthians 6:16–17, we read:

And what agreement does the temple of Elohim have with idols? For you are the temple of the living Elohim; as Elohim has said, “I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their Elohim, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be you separate,” says the Master, “and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.” (emphasis added)

The issue of clean or pure and unclean, polluted or abominable meats is not simply a dietary or health consideration, but a spiritual issue with YHVH. Both Moses (Lev 19:2) and the apostolic writers had a clear sense of the fact that without holiness no one will see YHVH (Heb 12:14), and that holiness or being kadosh or set-apart from the ways, lifestyles, ideologies of this world (i.e., from spiritual Egypt) is an absolute requirement of YHVH for his people. Is it possible to spiritualize away the concept of set-apartness and still be true to the Word of Elohim? Can one be spiritually sanctified (set-apart) through the atoning work of Yeshua at the cross, but then have a polluted lifestyle? Can one profess a righteous lifestyle and be set-apart without walking out that lifestyle? Can one follow the spirit of the law and violate the letter and still be acceptable to YHVH? What did James say about faith without works (Jas 2:20)? What did Yeshua teach at the Sermon on the Mount (Matt 5–7) about uniting the letter and the spirit of the law and practicing both? (Specifically read Matt 5:21–48 for the answer.)

Leviticus 11:10, 20, 23, 41, 42, Abomination. Heb. sheqets (Strong’s H8263) meaning “a detestable thing or idol.” It can also mean “to make abominable” or “contaminate.” This word is also used in connection with idolatrous practices, either referring to the idols themselves as being abhorrent and detestable in Elohim’s sight, or to something associated with the idolatrous ritual (TWOT, pp. 954–955; e.g. Jer 16:18; Ezek 5:11; 7:20; 2 Chron 15:8). Not only are the idols an abomination, but those who worship them become detestable as well (Hos 9:10). In fact, the word abomination in “abomination of desolation” as mentioned in Daniel 9:27 and 12:11 is the same Hebrew word. It is generally viewed that this prophecy was fulfilled when Antiochus Ephiphanes (a prophetic foreshadow of the Antichrist) set up an idol of Zeus in the Jerusalem temple (Ibid.). It should be clear that when YHVH uses sheqets (or its cognates) in relationship to certain practices (e.g., eating unclean meats or idol worship) that he is attempting to impress upon his people the extreme gravity of the sins they are committing against him.

What is sin and how to overcome it

Dealing With the “Leavening” in Our Lives

Throughout Scripture, leavening is a spiritual metaphor for sin, pride, hypocrisy, malice, bitterness and false religious doctrine (Pss 71:4; 73:21; Hos 7:4; Matt 16:6; Mark 8:15; Luke 12:1; 1 Cor 5:8–6; Gal 5:9). Even as a small amount of leavening agents in bread (e.g., yeast and various chemical agents) will quickly permeate bread dough causing it to rise, so a little sin can rapidly infect our lives (or like a quick spread cancer disease) and take us away from Elohim’s path of righteous-living.

Victory 21030574

The Scripture teaches us to be overcomers (Rom 12:21; 1 John 2:13–14; 5:4) eradicating the leavening of sin from our lives. We must overcome the world, the flesh and the devil (Jas 3:15). Yeshua admonished each of the seven Messianic assemblies to be overcomers (Rev 2:7,11,17,26; 3:5,12,21; see also Matt 24:13). For those who overcome, there will be great rewards—a spiritual inheritance; they will be sons of Elohim (Rev 21:7).

The Greek word for overcome is nikao (Strong’s G3528) meaning “to conquer, to get the victory, prevail” and is where the word nike comes from.

What Is Sin?

  • Sin is the anything that violates the Torah-instructions/laws of Elohim (1 John 3:4).
  • Sin is unrighteousness (1 John 5:17; YHVH’s Torah commands define what righteousness is, Ps 119:172).
  • Sin is not believing in Yeshua, who is the Torah-Word of Elohim incarnate (John 3:18; 16:9).
  • Sin is failing to do (or not to do) that we which we should be do (or not do) — i.e., sin of ommission (Jas4:17).
  • Sin is putting me-first (my desires, impulses), not YHVH first (his will) in our lives. It is humanism. It is following the lie of the devil: man can have it his way regardless of what YHVH’s Word says, and not suffer any consequences for it. This is the big lie from the serpent in the Garden.
  • Sin is a direct challenge to YHVH’s authority in our lives. It is arrogance and self exaltation against YHVH’s will. It involves lack of belief in his Word. It is putting my will above his Word.
