Is “the Lord’s day” Sunday?

Revelation 1:10, The Lord’s Day. This verse is one of the cliche biblical passages that mainstream church scholars use to “prove” Sunday’s replacement of the Sabbath. The problem with this position is that there’s no clear scriptural proof that the apostles ever changed the Sabbath to Sunday. What’s more, to view this passage as referring to Sunday is to take a phrase the early church fathers used as a euphemism for Sunday when pushing for Sunday in place of Sabbath observance and to retroactively apply this meaning to John’s use of the phrase. Frankly, it is biased and dishonest scholarship to take the phrase “the Lord’s day” with its second century colloquial meaning and then to back-apply this meaning to John’s use of the phrase when there’s no reason to believe this was John’s intended meaning.

Alternatively, the phrase, “the Lord’s day, can be a reference to the biblical term “the day of the Lord’s wrath” when YHVH, in the end times, will judge the nations for their wickedness. This is a point that several biblical scholars have made (see From Sabbath to Sunday, by Samuele Bacchiochi, p. 111; E. W. Bullinger’s Companion Bible footnote on Rev 1:10; The Jewish New Testament Commentary on this verse, p. 791, by David Sterns).

There is actually more scriptural proof that the phrase “the day of the Lord” is a reference to the seventh day Sabbath than to the first the week. In Isaiah 58:13, the prophet YHVH refers to the Sabbath as “my holy day…the holy day of the Lord.” So conceivably, it could have been on the Sabbath day itself that John received his vision on the island of Patmos about that great and terrible day of YHVH’s wrath that is to come on the earth just prior to the Messiah’s second coming.

  1. Very true Natan.

I am only interested in keeping the sevening of time that Abba gave to Creation as a sign of authorship of Creation as a sign between him and me.

Still am thinking that modern people have forgotten how to measure Holy Time and even those of Messianic Hebraic faith are still holding onto a syncretic way by using in part the pagan week days and the International Dateline without cognisance…..conflating the Holy and profane to come up with an incorrect conclusion.

Neither of these descriptors of time were part of Creation and the Father’s Words to us.

The very first day mankind witnessed was in Gar Eden. It started in the evening and was not proclaimed at midnight in a line that was decreed by men in the very late 1890’s.
The Land promised to Abraham is a lot further East of Jerusalem and the present borders of modern Israel are also a lot less than what was promised.

Perhaps we actually need a rethink. It won’t affect USA believers but it does effect those East of Greater Israel and West of the IDL.

I have meditated on this very much and asked Elohim for a fleece as I have been so troubled over this. I do not want to preceed His day just because of a dateline made to bring the world under ONE Order for commerce. I have prayed and struggled with this and have suffered & been entirely misattributed as to motive by those who are programmed to hate christian church things who are in the Hebraic understanding of Messiah but are not willing to look at this more deeply than that.

Natan to your credit as a man of Elohim you did none of those things.

I have heard of other people in Australia who have had their hearts convicted of this truth and have purified themselves to NOT conform to the Rabbinic dictates or Christian dictates or Worldy dictates of what time is either…. although I do not know of anyone specifically bar myself and my husband.

Doing this also makes others think you are stupid because you changed from Christianity to Judaism and then have gone back to Christianity and nothing could be further from the Truth of the situation.

    I have been given a fleece………
My mobile phone now automatically goes silent Friday evenings AND Saturday evenings.

I cannot change it in any way.

This came some time after seeking and I thought that it was a spiritual dark thing that happened and then when I was celebrating Sukkot the Spirit led me to a piece that had been directly written against those who keep the 7th day Sabbath of Elohim on the Sunday simply to remove the pagan timekeeping out of their lives and are NOT afraid of being anathema to the regular Christian church for keeping a Saturday Sabbath at all….that is where I actually started & the Spirit worked in my heart to move me to this understanding.

When I reflected further on this I recalled that my phone went to silent automatically when I began keeping the standard understanding of Sabbath on the Friday too some years back.

The standard of Hebrew Roots seems to be to call anyone who ” keeps the Sunday” as the Sabbath as wanting to not be persecuted by the regular communities of faith in Jesus and that is just untrue.

If Hebrew Roots removes the leaven from our present timekeeping methodology we are all then celebrating OUR KING on the 7th Day as our Great Living Father desires…no mixtures and pure.

Natan I thank Abba for your wisdom that did not crucify me when I approached you about it some time back and I thank you for your great love shown to all men in proclaiming truth.
May you be blessed greatly throughout the Fall Moedim and all those who love Abba and His Salvation. And may those who don’t know Him yet be called and turn to the wonder that is our Salvation.
    Love in Messiah
    FJ

    • Please help me to understand what you’re saying. Are you saying that the seventh day of the week in Australia and environs should actually be on what is now called the first day of the week, which means that Sunday is actually the seventh day Shabbat because of the setting of the International Date Line?
