{"id":9425,"date":"2016-09-13T06:54:58","date_gmt":"2016-09-13T13:54:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/?p=9425"},"modified":"2016-09-13T06:54:58","modified_gmt":"2016-09-13T13:54:58","slug":"incest-versus-fornication","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/2016\/09\/13\/incest-versus-fornication\/","title":{"rendered":"Incest Versus Fornication"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Deuteronomy 23:2, <i>A child of incest shall not.<\/i><\/b><i> Mamzer <\/i>(translated in the KJV as <i>bastard<\/i>; NKJV <i>one of<\/i> <i>illegitimate birth<\/i>) means \u201ca child of a prohibited marriage.\u201d<i> <\/i>Contrary to popular opinion, this is not referring to one born out of wedlock (the result of fornication or premarital relations), but rather the fruit of an incestuous or adulterous relationship (<i>The ArtScroll Stone Edition Chumash<\/i>, p. 1054).<\/p>\n<p>According to S. R. Hirsch, a Jewish Torah scholar, a <i>mamzer <\/i>was disadvantaged legally in no other way except that he was excluded from the assembly or congregation (<i>qahal<\/i>) of YHVH. According to <i>The Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament<\/i>, the Hebrew word <i>qahal <\/i>is equivalent to the Greek word <i>ecclesia<\/i>,<i> <\/i>which is commonly translated as <i>church <\/i>in the NT (ibid<i>.<\/i>, vol. 2, p. 790).<\/p>\n<p>What does Torah\u2019s treatment of a <i>mamzer <\/i>say about YHVH\u2019s view of the sanctity of marriage and the family and the upholding of such as a cornerstone institution within the assembly of the saints? Hirsch comments on this verse, \u201c[A] <i>mamzer <\/i>accordingly represents, by his existence, a sin against those laws by which God wishes marriage in His <i>qahal<\/i> to be elevated out of the sphere of simply physical association by that which [the <i>Talmud <\/i>in] <i>Kiddushin<\/i> [73a] expresses\u201d (<i>Judaica Press The Pentateuch\/Deuteronomy<\/i>, p. 456).<\/p>\n<p>In the Torah, premarital sex isn\u2019t a capital offense. When it happened, the man was either to marry the young lady, or he was to pay a fine to her father. Incest, however, like homosexuality, was an abomination in YHVH\u2019s eyes (Lev 18), thus it would stand to reason that YHVH would take a harder stand on the product of such a sexual union. The point is to teach his people not to get involved in such sinful sexual practices in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>Would excluding certain individuals who oppose traditional marriage and define it in ways contrary to biblical definition now be politically correct in our society?
