Matt 5:31\u201332 and 19) <i>Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?<\/i> <\/b>Yeshua confirms the fact that divorce wasn\u2019t part of YHVH\u2019s original marriage plan, but that Moses allowed divorce only for a specific reason.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/2015\/12\/12\/yeshuas-thoughts-on-divorce\/divorce-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7634\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7634\" src=\"http:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Divorce-1-296x300.jpg\" alt=\"Divorce 1\" width=\"296\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Divorce-1-296x300.jpg 296w, https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Divorce-1-1011x1024.jpg 1011w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 296px) 100vw, 296px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the Torah, divorce was permitted for lack of virginity at the time of marriage, and for specific sexual sins committed that violated the marriage covenant (note Deut 22:13\u201314 cp. Deut 24:1\u20134), yet eventually (by the time of Yeshua), among some of the Jews, the divorce laws had become so relaxed that a man could put his wife away for any reason (Matt 19:3). To those Jews who had such a liberal interpretation of the Torah\u2019s divorce laws, Yeshua was addressing not what the Torah specifically said, but what the religious-legal interpretations had become of those laws.<\/p>\n<p>To bring the concept of marriage and divorce back to the Creator\u2019s original design, Yeshua upheld that, according to the Torah\u2014YHVH\u2019s master plan, marriage between a man and a woman was inviolable and that divorce was permissible only for certain gross sexual sins and for (irreconcilable) hardness of heart (see more at Matt 19:8\u20139).<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line of what Yeshua is saying is this: YHVH\u2019s highest ideal is for a man and woman to marry and become one, as YHVH Elohim (the Godhead \u2014 the Father, the Holy Spirit\/Mother, and the Son) is one, of which the marriage is to be a reflection. Sadly, because of the hardness of the sinful human heart, divorce happens, which Moses permitted under certain circumstances, but not for just any reason. Divorce, though permissible, is YHVH\u2019s lowest ideal for the family, since it leaves in its wake so much ruination.<\/p>\n<p><b>Mark 10:10\u201313, <i>Divorces\u2026little children. <\/i><\/b>The proximity to Yeshua\u2019s teaching on divorce with his blessing the little children presents us with an interesting juxtaposition of ideas. It\u2019s as if the Gospel writer is obliquely conveying to us the fact that divorce is detrimental to families \u2014 especially to children.<\/p>\n<p><b>Mark 10:11, <i>Divorces his wife and marries another. <\/i><\/b>Tertullian (A.D. 160\u2013220), the early church father, understands this to mean that he who divorces his wife <i>in order<\/i> to marry another does so unlawfully and is thus an adulterer. He concedes that Moses allowed for divorce and that Yeshua accepts this provision in the Torah, but not if it\u2019s done for the wrong reasons and, therefore, unlawfully (<i>Ante-Nicene Church Father<\/i>, vol 3; \u201cTertullian Against Marcion\u201d; Book 4, chap 34; pp. 404\u2013405; Hendrickson, 1995).<\/p>\n<div class=\"evernoteSiteMemory\"><a href=\"javascript:\" onclick=\"Evernote.doClip({title: 'Yeshua\\&#039;s Thoughts on Divorce',url: 'https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/2015\/12\/12\/yeshuas-thoughts-on-divorce\/',contentID: 'post-7633',suggestTags: 'Divorce,Mark,marriage,Yeshua',providerName: 'Hoshana Rabbah Blog',styling: 'text' });return false\" class=\"evernoteSiteMemoryLink\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.evernote.com\/article-clipper.png\" \nclass=\"evernoteSiteMemoryButton\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/a>\t\t\t\t<div class=\"evernoteSiteMemoryClear\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mark 10:2\u201310, (cp.
