{"id":7456,"date":"2015-11-10T20:13:45","date_gmt":"2015-11-11T04:13:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/?p=7456"},"modified":"2015-11-10T20:18:32","modified_gmt":"2015-11-11T04:18:32","slug":"genesis-teaches-salvation-by-grace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/2015\/11\/10\/genesis-teaches-salvation-by-grace\/","title":{"rendered":"Genesis Teaches Salvation by Grace Through Faith Resulting in Good Works"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Genesis 26:5,<\/b> <b><i>Because. <\/i><\/b>Based on Paul\u2019s teaching in Romans 4, we see that the Abrahamic Covenant is the model for salvation, which is salvation by grace through faith leading to or resulting in good works or righteousness (Eph 2:8\u201310).<\/p>\n<p>From this verse, it might appear the Abrahamic Covenant wasn\u2019t a faith-based covenant at all, but a works based on. In other words, Abraham had to do something to attain to be counted righteous or to come into good standing with Elohim \u2014 a concept which is commonly referred to as \u201creceiving salvation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fact is that in the Abrahamic Covenant, Abraham only had to have faith and believe in YHVH to be justified or to be considered righteous by Elohim (Gen 15:6). It was on this basis that YHVH granted him \u201csalvation.\u201d But this initial faith on Abraham\u2019s part and the righteousness Elohim attributed to him was but the first step in Abraham\u2019s faith walk. He had to walk out his faith and continue trusting YHVH.<\/p>\n<p>The apostolic writers present the idea that one\u2019s faith is a walk, not a one time event. It\u2019s more than faith. It\u2019s faithfulness to YHVH\u2019s instructions. James clearly states in his epistle <!--more-->that this is how one demonstrates the legitimacy of one\u2019s faith. This Abraham showed by his obedience to YHVH\u2019s Torah or YHVH\u2019s Word or voice. Furthermore, as a result of this obedience, YHVH promised to bless him beyond simply being granted initial salvation or righteousness. This two-step approach or model still holds true in the Testimony of Yeshua. One is saved or delivered from the wages of their past sin which is death by their faith (initial salvation), and then one ceases from that sin by continuing in the good works of Torah obedience.<\/p>\n<p>Yeshua and the apostolic writers in numerous instances reveal that future rewards (both temporal and eternal rewards) come as a result of one\u2019s good works. The ultimate reward is being granted eternal life and inclusion in the family of Elohim.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Abraham obeyed<\/i><\/b><i> [shema<\/i><i>] my voice [kol<\/i><i>], and kept [<\/i>also:<i> observe, preserve, guard; shamar]<\/i><i>\u00a0my charge [mishmereth<\/i><i>], my commandments [mitzvah<\/i><i>] my statutes [chuqqah<\/i><i>, and my laws [toroti<\/i><i>]<\/i><b>.<\/b> There are those who teach that the Torah-law does not predate Moses. Not only does this verse disprove that, but it also shows that Abraham kept the Torah-law of Elohim. In a Hebrew lexicon or word dictionary, look up each of these words and study their meanings and how they are used contextually in the Scriptures.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>My voice. <\/i><\/b>This verse equates the voice of Elohim with his Torah commands. To obey the voice of Elohim is to obey his Torah instructions. The voice and Torah of Elohim are two ways of saying the same thing. YHVH\u2019s servants were obeying his voice, the Torah, long before it was written down by Moses.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>My laws [Torah]. <\/i><\/b>The word <i>Torah <\/i>here is in the plural. The Jewish sages say that this speaking of both the written and oral Torahs. The primary meaning of the word <i>Torah <\/i>(<i>Strong\u2019s <\/i>H8451, <i>TWOT <\/i>910b), according to the <i>Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament <\/i>(<i>TWOT<\/i>) is \u201cteaching\u201d<i> <\/i>(and not \u201claw\u201d). <i>Strong\u2019s Concordance <\/i>lists the meaning of <i>Torah <\/i>in this order: \u201ca precept, a statute<i>.\u201d The New Brown-Driver-Briggs-Gesenius Hebrew-English Lexicon<\/i> defines <i>Torah <\/i>as \u201cdirection, instruction, law\u201d<i> <\/i>(in that order). According to <i>Strong\u2019s Expanded Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible<\/i>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>Torah<\/i> signifies primarily \u201cdirection, teaching, instruction\u201d (Prov 13:14). It is derived from the verb <i>yarah<\/i>\u00a0[meaning] <i>\u2018to project, point out\u2019<\/i> (3384) and hence to point out or teach. The law of [Elohim] is that which points out or indicates His will to man \u2026 Seen against its background of the verb <i>yarah<\/i>, it becomes clear that <i>Torah<\/i> is much more than law or a set of rules. Torah is not restriction or hindrance, but instead the means whereby one can reach a goal or ideal.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>The Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament<\/em>\u00a0similarly states,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The word <i>Torah<\/i> basically means \u201cteaching\u201d whether it is the wise man instructing his son or [Elohim] instructing Israel. The wise give insight into all aspects of life so that the young may know how to conduct themselves and to live a long blessed life (Prov 3:1f). So too [Elohim], motivated by love, reveals to man basic insights into how to live with each other and how to approach [Elohim]. Through the law [Elohim] shows his interest in all aspects of man\u2019s life which is to be lived under his direction and care. Law of [Elohim] stands parallel to [the] word of [YHVH] to signify that law is the revelation of [Elohim\u2019s] will (e.g. Isa 1:10).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As already noted, the word <i>Torah<\/i> originates from the root word<i> yarah<\/i>\u00a0(<i>Strong\u2019s <\/i>H3384), which means \u201cto flow as water, to lay or throw as in shooting an arrow; to point out as if aiming the finger to make a point, to teach.\u201d Another cognate (related word) of the word <i>Torah<\/i> is the Hebrew word <i>moreh <\/i>(<i>Strong\u2019s<\/i> H4175) which means \u201cteacher or archer (as in one who shoots at a target).\u201d <i>Moreh <\/i>derives from the same Hebrew root word, <i>yarah<\/i>,<i> <\/i>as does <i>Torah.<\/i> Therefore, when one is walking according to the Torah of YHVH Elohim, one is walking in the light of YHVH\u2019s truth, which is hitting the mark of righteousness. Likewise, YHVH\u2019s teachings or instructions are a river of life flowing from his throne aimed at hitting the mark of truth and righteousness. By contrast, the Hebrew word for sin is <i>chata <\/i>(<i>Strong\u2019s <\/i>H2298) which means \u201cto miss the mark,\u201d i.e., transgressing the Torah as 1 John 3:4 states, \u201cSin is the transgression of the Torah.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"evernoteSiteMemory\"><a href=\"javascript:\" onclick=\"Evernote.doClip({title: 'Genesis Teaches Salvation by Grace Through Faith Resulting in Good Works',url: 'https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/2015\/11\/10\/genesis-teaches-salvation-by-grace\/',contentID: 'post-7456',suggestTags: 'Abraham,Faith,Genesis,Grace,obedeince,Paul,Salvation,Torah,Works',providerName: 'Hoshana Rabbah Blog',styling: 'text' });return false\" class=\"evernoteSiteMemoryLink\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.evernote.com\/article-clipper.png\" \nclass=\"evernoteSiteMemoryButton\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/a>\t\t\t\t<div class=\"evernoteSiteMemoryClear\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Genesis 26:5, Because.
