{"id":6887,"date":"2015-07-28T09:32:39","date_gmt":"2015-07-28T16:32:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/?p=6887"},"modified":"2015-07-28T09:32:39","modified_gmt":"2015-07-28T16:32:39","slug":"pastor-is-a-herder-of-sheep","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/2015\/07\/28\/pastor-is-a-herder-of-sheep\/","title":{"rendered":"A Pastor Is a Herder of Sheep"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Ephesians 4:11, He<i> gave some to be \u2026pastors<\/i>.<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b>The word <em>pastor <\/em>is the\u00a0Greek word <i>poimen <\/i>(pronounced <i>poy-mane<\/i>) occurs 18 times in the NT and is translated in the KJV as <i>shepherd <\/i>(17 times) and only once as <i>pastor <\/i>(pl., Eph 4:11). <i>Poimen<\/i> literally means \u201ca herdsman, esp. a shepherd or one who cares for sheep.\u201d In the Near East, it was the duty of the shepherd to watch for enemies trying to attack the sheep, to defend the sheep from attackers, to heal the wounded and sick sheep, to find and save lost or trapped sheep, to love them, and to share their lives with them thus earning their trust.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/2015\/07\/28\/pastor-is-a-herder-of-sheep\/shepherd-w-sheep-33398033\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6888\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6888\" src=\"http:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Shepherd-w-Sheep-33398033-300x275.jpg\" alt=\"Shepherd w- Sheep 33398033\" width=\"300\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Shepherd-w-Sheep-33398033-300x275.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Shepherd-w-Sheep-33398033-1024x939.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Shepherd-w-Sheep-33398033-327x300.jpg 327w, https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Shepherd-w-Sheep-33398033.jpg 1248w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <i>TDNT <\/i>summarizes the role of the shepherd in this manner: In the Gospels, the shepherd\u2019s sacrificial loyalty to his calling is depicted with loving sympathy using true-to-life pictures. For example, he knows each animal by name (John 10:3, 14, 17), seeks the lost sheep, is happy when he finds it (Luke 15:4\u20136), and is prepared to hazard his life to protect the sheep form the wolf (John 10:11\u201313). Yeshua even uses the shepherd as figure for Elohim in two parables (Luke 15:4\u20137; Matt 18:12\u201314; Ibid., vol. 6, p. 490).<\/p>\n<p>As noted, only once in the NT are congregational leaders called <i>shepherds <\/i>(Eph 4:11). The absence of the article before <i>teachers<\/i> in the list of church offices (Eph 4:11) indicates that <i>pastors<\/i> and <i>teachers <\/i>are to form a single leadership group as it relates to ministering to the individual congregations, yet there\u2019s no indication in this verse of pastor being an ecclesiastical title (Ibid.)<\/p>\n<p>The verb <i>poimainein<\/i>, a derivative of <i>poimen<\/i>, gives some indication of the work of the pastor in the congregation. By definition, <i>poimainein<\/i> indicates the leadership responsibility of feeding, nourishing, tending, leading, ruling and cherishing Elohim\u2019s flock or church (1 Pet 5:2; Acts 20:28; John 21:16) as a shepherd feeds his flock.<\/p>\n<div class=\"evernoteSiteMemory\"><a href=\"javascript:\" onclick=\"Evernote.doClip({title: 'A Pastor Is a Herder of Sheep',url:
