We support this measure, since we believe that people have the right to know what&#8217;s in their food and to make choices consistent with their values.<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Those in opposition to this measure to label GMO foods are mounting a vigorous campaign against this measure. Below is a response to these naysayers from Azure Standard Farms of Dufur, Oregon. The folks at Azure Standard are\u00a0both growers and purveyor of organic foods to the western U.S. for many years. Our family has\u00a0been clients of Azure Standard for nearly 20 years.<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Please read their statement to stay informed about the issues. The movement to label GMO foods is spreading and may come to your area. It&#8217;s good to be prepared ahead of time with the facts.<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"page_block\">\n<div id=\"page_header\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.azurestandard.com\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.azurestandard.com\/images\/www\/header_logo.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"header_search\">\n<form action=\"https:\/\/www.azurestandard.com\/shop\/search\" method=\"GET\"><strong>Azure\u2019s Response to GMO Labeling Opposition Statements<\/strong><\/form>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"content\"><strong><i>Oct. 22, 2014<\/i><\/strong><br \/>\nThe fight to label GMOs does not vary much from state-to-state.\u00a0 Citizen-based initiatives are established by people who genuinely care and want to know what they are eating and feeding to their families, while opponents \u2013 largely massive conglomerates \u2013 counter with a LOT of money and baseless statements that scare people into believing things that simply aren\u2019t true.<\/p>\n<p>Many such pamphlets are currently circulating in advance of the election, and we just can\u2019t stand by and not address some of the points being made.<\/p>\n<p><em>#1- Labeling GMOs will Raise Prices and Cost Taxpayers Money.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Nonsense<\/strong>.\u00a0 Companies change their labels all the time for their own purposes and for regulatory reasons, and they\u00a0<em>don\u2019t<\/em>\u00a0pass the cost onto consumers.\u00a0 It\u2019s considered a cost of doing business.\u00a0\u00a0 Think about a fairly recent addition to labels that didn\u2019t arise out of citizen initiatives, rather was passed by congress to ensure there would be clearer understanding of ingredients in packaged foods: The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) of 2004.\u00a0 It affected pretty much every manufacturer of packaged foods containing the top 8 allergen ingredients (soy, wheat, nuts, milk, etc.), and there was\u00a0<em>no<\/em>\u00a0public outcry that the extra bit of ink on the label would cost everyone more money.\u00a0 Furthermore, there wasn\u2019t even outcry about the substantial effort some companies go through to segregate ingredients if they desire to have no allergens in their products. If removing allergens from products is not a determining factor, then they simply let people know what ingredients they used to make the product. There\u2019s no shame in that; it\u2019s public service and good business practice to be open.<\/p>\n<p>It must also be said that GMO labeling laws have been passed in 64 other countries without prices being affected, and, this is the real kicker, American companies shipping products internationally to those countries with such laws\u00a0<em>do<\/em>\u00a0label their products accordingly!\u00a0 Truly, the same box of processed food containing GMOs that is sold here without indicating labels is shipped overseas with appropriate labels. Same food, different levels of transparency.\u00a0 It\u2019s not a money issue.\u00a0 The only ones it will cost will be the massive corporations because with increased awareness and transparency, more people will choose products without GMOs. Demand will drop and prices for GMO foods will too undoubtedly.<\/p>\n<p><em>#2- It will Hurt Oregon Farmers.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0We are farmers here at Azure, and we don\u2019t think so at all. It only stands to hurt huge corporate interests by providing people the knowledge of what they are eating and thereby reducing demand for GMO products.\u00a0 BUT, what that does is create a stronger niche and platform for small, medium and even large farmers that want to do right by people and the planet and produce GMO-free products.\u00a0 Listen, Oregon is known to be individualistic and not cow-tow to the will of corporations. It has a reputation around the globe for being clean and high quality. Think about our Pacific Rim trade partners who buy a tremendous amount from Oregon because they respect that standard and<em>\u00a0don\u2019t want<\/em>\u00a0GMOs.\u00a0 Labeling GMOs won\u2019t ban them, but it will encourage more farmers to choose GMO-free options to grow.<\/p>\n<p><em>#3- The Measure is Poorly Written.<\/em>\u00a0 This is said every time by every opponent of every measure ever put forth- GMO labeling or otherwise. Is this labeling measure all-inclusive? No, but that is\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0the point. It is a\u00a0<strong>start<\/strong>.\u00a0 We have to start raising awareness, and that is initially accomplished by information being openly presented.\u00a0 Honestly, we would prefer that the whole of Oregon follow the path of Jackson County and go GMO-free, period! We\u2019re not there yet, so\u00a0<em>starting<\/em>\u00a0by labeling packaged foods is the first step.\u00a0 Again, we\u2019ll point to the FALCPA of 2004. It is also\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0all inclusive by a long shot, and follows similar lines to Measure 92 with regard to which groups are included in the requirements and which are not.\u00a0 It\u2019s not the end-all be-all, but it\u2019s a start that we fully support.<\/p>\n<p>Truth be told, one of the reasons we feel this labeling measure is so important is because it starts and furthers the\u00a0<em>conversation<\/em>\u00a0about GMOs.\u00a0 We don\u2019t believe in telling another what they should or shouldn\u2019t eat. But, we do believe in providing information so that people can make educated and informed decisions.\u00a0 When people begin to see \u201ccontains genetically engineered ingredients\u201d, it will cause them to ask \u201cwhat are those?\u201d, and that is the critical question that will take us to a global shift in awareness about GMOs. People still have the right and liberty to choose as they will, AND they have the right to KNOW\u00a0<em>what\u00a0<\/em>they are choosing.<\/p>\n<p>As you are well aware at this point, the opponents to Measure 92 in Oregon have money on their side.
