It was not uncommon in ancient and Hebraic culture to have more than one name. We find this to be the case in the Scriptures in many instances.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/2013\/10\/05\/a-new-spiritual-identity-and-a-new-name\/attachment\/20474058\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3723\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3723\" alt=\"20474058\" src=\"http:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/20474058-243x300.jpg\" width=\"243\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/20474058-243x300.jpg 243w, https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/20474058.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 243px) 100vw, 243px\" \/><\/a>For example, Jethro (Yitro, Exod 3:1), the father-in-law of Moses, was known by two other names: Hobab (Num 10:29; Judg 4:11) and Reuel (Exod 2:18). Sometimes a person\u2019s name would reflect exploits or achievements accomplished in that person\u2019s life, one\u2019s character traits or one\u2019s destiny. Often when one was given a new mission or calling in life a new name was given to that person to reflect their new destiny. Examples of this would be <i>Abram <\/i>(\u201cexalted father\u201d)<i> <\/i>becoming <i>Abraham <\/i>(\u201cfather of a multitude\u201d), <i>Sarai<\/i> (princess) becoming <i>Sarah <\/i>(\u201cnoblewoman, queen\u201d), <i>Jacob <\/i>(\u201cprevailer, heelcatcher\u201d)<i> <\/i>becoming <i>Israel <\/i>(\u201cEl prevails, prince of El\u201d), or <i>Hoshea<\/i> (\u201csavior, deliverer\u201d)<i> becoming<\/i> <i>Joshua\/Yehoshua<\/i> (\u201cYah saves\/delivers\u201d). It is not uncommon for redeemed believers returning to the Hebrew roots of the Christian faith to take a new name to reflect their new spiritual journey, mission, destiny or identity. Some may think this a strange thing to do, but in Hebraic culture this was a very acceptable practice.
