{"id":2981,"date":"2013-05-22T08:17:15","date_gmt":"2013-05-22T15:17:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/?p=2981"},"modified":"2014-08-23T15:42:24","modified_gmt":"2014-08-23T22:42:24","slug":"break-the-law-if-youre-dead-to-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/2013\/05\/22\/break-the-law-if-youre-dead-to-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Are You Free to Break the Law If You&#8217;re Dead to It?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Romans 7:4, <i>You have been made dead with regard to the Torah<\/i>.<\/strong> David Stern in his commentary (<em>The Jewish New Testament Commentary<\/em>, p. 375) explains that it is not the Torah that has been made dead (or abrogated), nor is a believer made dead in the sense of no longer responding to its truth. Rather, he has been made dead not to all of the Torah, but to three aspects of it: (1) its capacity to stir sin in him (vv. 5\u201314), (2) its capacity to produce irremediable guilt feelings (vv. 15\u201324), and (3) its penalties, punishment and curses (8:1\u20134).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/2013\/05\/22\/break-the-law-if-youre-dead-to-it\/attachment\/23243067\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2982\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2982\" alt=\"23243067\" src=\"http:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/23243067-163x300.jpg\" width=\"163\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/23243067-163x300.jpg 163w, https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/23243067.jpg 436w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 163px) 100vw, 163px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To fully understand Paul\u2019s writings, one must have a <i>complete<\/i> understanding of the Torah and all of its aspects. Most individuals coming from the Christian theological perspective have a very limited and narrow understanding of the Torah (or as they term it, <i>the law<\/i>). For example, they fail to understand that how we react to the Torah\u2014obediently versus disobediently\u2014will determine how Torah \u201creacts\u201d to us.<\/p>\n<p>For example, YHVH has embedded into the Torah a cause-and-effect spiritual mechanism: obey and be blessed, disobey and suffer the consequences, i.e., the curses. Other laws in the universe with which we are familiar have the same cause-effect rewards-punishment systems built into them.<\/p>\n<p>How about the law of gravity? Try jumping off a tall building! Paul in verse 13 asks whether we are implying that the (good) Torah, like gravity, is bad? His reply is that it\u2019s not. Gravity, like Torah is good. It is when someone defies gravity and jumps off a tall building that gravity takes on a negative connotation. Is this because gravity is inherently evil? No. The law of gravity is for our benefit, since it keeps man from spinning (or floating) uncontrollably off of this earth into outer space.<\/p>\n<p>So what causes men to jump off of tall buildings? Gravity or the evil inclination inside of their character? The answer is obvious. The same idea applies to the Torah. Paul says in verse 13 that it was sin working death in him through something good (i.e., theTorah), so that sin might be clearly exposed as sin.<b> <\/b><\/p>\n<p>So the Torah is very beneficial at exposing the sin in our lives, bringing it out into the open so that it can be dealt with (through confession, repentance, and faith in the blood atonement of Yeshua), so that we might be redeemed, justified, sanctified and finally reconciled to YHVH. Even the Torah\u2019s \u201cnegative\u201d side has a very beneficial outcome for those who are willing to follow YHVH\u2019s path of reconciliation and righteousness.<\/p>\n<p>Many Christians resist the Torah not because it\u2019s inherently evil, but because of their own evil inclination, which resists and rejects anything that casts himself in a negative light and forces him to deal with the resident sin in his life.<\/p>\n<p>Romans 8:7 explains the root of this problem in man: \u201cThe carnal mind is enmity against Elohim, for it is not subject to the Torah-law of Elohim, nor indeed can be.\u201d<b> <\/b><\/p>\n<p>At the beginning, Adam and Eve were not subject to Elohim\u2019s Torah-instructions and quickly rebelled against his clear commands, and humans have been following in this path of pride and rebellion ever since.<\/p>\n<div class=\"evernoteSiteMemory\"><a href=\"javascript:\" onclick=\"Evernote.doClip({title: 'Are You Free to Break the Law If You\\&#039;re Dead to It?',url: 'https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/2013\/05\/22\/break-the-law-if-youre-dead-to-it\/',contentID: 'post-2981',suggestTags: 'Dead to the Law,Law,Paul,Romans,Torah',providerName: 'Hoshana Rabbah Blog',styling: 'text' });return false\" class=\"evernoteSiteMemoryLink\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.evernote.com\/article-clipper.png\" \nclass=\"evernoteSiteMemoryButton\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/a>\t\t\t\t<div class=\"evernoteSiteMemoryClear\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Romans 7:4, You have been made dead with regard to the Torah.
