Jeremiah prophesied to ancient Israel some 2800 years ago. What relevance could a bearded and robed prophet from the Middle East have to us living in the 21st century? The answer is simple: People are people! Only the actors, costumes, sets and venues change.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/13\/2723\/prophet-15228598\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2724\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2724\" alt=\"Prophet 15228598\" src=\"http:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Prophet-15228598-152x300.jpg\" width=\"152\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Prophet-15228598-152x300.jpg 152w, https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Prophet-15228598-519x1024.jpg 519w, https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Prophet-15228598.jpg 609w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 152px) 100vw, 152px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So what social and spiritual issues burdened the old prophet\u2019s heart?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Israel worshipped other gods besides YHVH Elohim (Jer 2:5).<\/li>\n<li>Their religious leaders didn\u2019t know Elohim (Jer 2:8).<\/li>\n<li>False prophets filled the land (Jer 2:8) who predict only ear-ticklying nicety things (Jer 6:11).<\/li>\n<li>Religious people relied on their own efforts\u2014programs, man-made religious systems\u2014instead of relying on the Spirit of Elohim to lead them (Jer 2:13).<\/li>\n<li>The fear of YHVH Elohim was gone from the land (Jer 2:19; 5:24).<\/li>\n<li>Israel had turned to false eastern religious systems (e.g. pantheism and earth worship, Jer 2:27).<\/li>\n<li>The abominable practice of abortion\/infanticide was socially acceptable (Jer 2:34).<\/li>\n<li>The fatherless and needy were not being defended (Jer 5:28).<\/li>\n<li>The religious system was full of self-appointed leaders who were con artists who lacked spiritual power (Jer 5:31).<\/li>\n<li>False spiritual leaders were popular among the people (Jer 5:31)<\/li>\n<li>The people and spiritual leaders were given over to greed and covetousness\u2014i.e., the love of money (Jer 6:13; 8:10).<\/li>\n<li>Everyone had rejected the Torah (Jer 6:19).<\/li>\n<li>People refused to repent of their wicked sins (Jer 8:6).<\/li>\n<li>The land was full of false spiritual teachers who didn\u2019t know the Torah, and who spoke falsely (Jer 8:8\u20139).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From Jeremiah\u2019s day until now, are things really different in our society or even in the church world?<\/p>\n<div class=\"evernoteSiteMemory\"><a href=\"javascript:\" onclick=\"Evernote.doClip({title: 'Same Play, Different Actors',url: 'https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/13\/2723\/',contentID: 'post-2723',suggestTags: 'Jeremiah,Sin,Social Ills',providerName: 'Hoshana Rabbah Blog',styling: 'text' });return false\" class=\"evernoteSiteMemoryLink\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.evernote.com\/article-clipper.png\" \nclass=\"evernoteSiteMemoryButton\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/a>\t\t\t\t<div class=\"evernoteSiteMemoryClear\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Overview of Jeremiah 1\u20138 Jeremiah chapters 1\u20148.
