Humility. This is a beautiful treasure box with a label on it, but what is inside?<\/strong> We all have a sense of what humility is and know it when we see it, but can we define it? Are we humble? Perhaps. Maybe, oxymoronically we are even proud of our humility. For sure, true humility is a noble virtue albeit a rare one. The Bible gives this character trait high praises, for it is a spiritual currency that if one possesses has extreme value with YHVH Elohim. Perhaps it is even\u00a0 a key that unlocks the door to the kingdom of heaven. As confirmation of its\u00a0 high value in the eyes of our Creator, we read in his Word,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. (Matt 18:4)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, Elohim resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.\u2026Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. (Jas 4:6, 10)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for Elohim resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of Elohim, that he may exalt you in due time. (1 Pet 5:5\u20136)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Again, what does the Bible mean when it speaks of being humble or humility?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bible teaches us that humility is more than a mere theological abstraction, or simply an individualistic and introspective reality. It is an aspect of the social order and requirement of the kingdom of Elohim (The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia<\/em> or ISBE<\/em>, vol. 2, p. 776). Humility is something that has to be learned, so that it becomes a state of one\u2019s heart and mind and that will then radiate out into a lifestyle which determines what a person says, as well as how one thinks and acts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The biblical truth of justification by grace through faith speaks to the central importance and reality of humility as evidenced in Yeshua\u2019s Parable of the Publican and the Pharisee in Luke 18:9\u201314. The Pharisee\u2019s lack of humility before Elohim manifested itself as arrogance toward others, resulting in rejection by Elohim. On the other hand, the publican who humbled himself before the Almighty by admitting his sinful condition was justified in the courts of heaven. The people who know that their salvation is a result of Elohim\u2019s grace do not act presumptuously toward others (ibid. pp. 776\u2013777). The well-known saying, \u201cThere for the grace of God, go I,\u201d should be front and center in every Christian\u2019s consciousness. The ISBE<\/em> goes on to say, \u201cThe reign of God constitutes a realm in which all previous ideas of prestige, privilege, and protocols are transformed. To submit to God\u2019s kingship is to participate in a new social reality. \u2018Who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?\u2019 (Matt 18:1). The one who submits to the rule of God\u201d (ibid.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The obverse of humility is pride, which like a leaky, wooden ship, seeps in and out of our every pore and is so endemic to us as to be virtually unrecognizable and undetectable as it defiles us from within. As Yeshua said,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: these are the things which defile a man. (Matt 15:19\u201320)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Jeremiah did not speak kindly about the natural condition of man either when he declared by the Spirit of Elohim,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? (Jer 17:9)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Though, unlike pride, humility is a rare asset in man\u2019s spiritual bank account, yet is a vital asset in YHVH\u2019s spiritual economy and is an essential attribute if one is to have any kind of relationship with their Creator, But again, what is humility?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biblical Humility Succinctly Defined<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s now define the word humility<\/em> from a biblical Hebraic perspective. Humility<\/em> or humbleness<\/em> is a modest or low view of one\u2019s own importance. It is \u201ca freedom from arrogance that grows out of the recognition that all we have and are comes from God\u201d (Nelson\u2019s Illustrated Bible Dictionary<\/em> it its article entitled Humility<\/em>). To the heathen Greek philosophers of the biblical era, \u201chumility implied inadequacy, lack of dignity, and worthlessness\u2026.This is not the meaning of humility as defined by the Bible\u201d (ibid.). In the secular world, pride in oneself not only is an accepted trait, but is expected of leaders and people of renown. As is the case here and in other areas of human understanding, the ways of Elohim are not only not<\/em> men\u2019s ways, but often the complete opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith YHVH. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. (Isa 55:8\u20139)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

YHVH Set the Example<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have you ever heard a sermon or Bible teaching on the humility of YHVH Elohim? Probably not. Neither have I. The thought of it never occurred to me until one day I heard a praise song in French the lyrics of which mentioned \u201cthe humility of God.\u201d Initially I chaffed at this concept, but the more I meditated on it, the more it became obvious that YHVH set us the ultimate example of what it is to be humble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the disciples of Messiah, Yeshua is the central focal point of all biblical truth including the living example of how humility is to be walked out. Think of it. Yeshua, came from heaven, and then humbled himself and became a human, and was then murdered by the very humans he had created. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who, being in the form of Elohim, thought it not robbery to be equal with Elohim: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. (Phil 2:5\u20138)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, Yeshua taught about and lived a humble lifestyle as a homeless itinerant preacher serving others. He then died a humble death as mankind\u2019s Savior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. (Matt 11:29)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

[Yeshua] riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples\u2019 feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. \u2026 if I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another\u2019s feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. (John 13:4\u20135, 14\u201315)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let this mind be in you, which was also in the Messiah Yeshua. (Phil 2:5)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to humility, Yeshua blazed a new path for the world to follow, which his true disciples have been endeavoring to emulate ever since. He set aside his divine glory and power and became a lowly human. While on this earth, he came to serve, not to be served. He hung out with the lowliest echelon of people and those the powerful, rich and elite of his day disdained such as publicans, sinners, tax collectors, common working people, Roman soldiers and even demonized prostitutes. He then suffered a brutal and demeaning death, was crucified naked on a cross by the very people that in his preincarnate state had created. Yeshua was merely mirroring and in complete accord with the humility of his Father in heaven, who so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whoever believes on him should not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16). Moreover, the all powerful YHVH Elohim still humbles himself in love to forgive the sinners for whom his Son died, and in the mean time demonstrates never-ending compassion, longsuffering patience with wicked and rebellious humanity, when it is in his power, and is his divine right to punish, if not obliterate defiant and hateful humans. To endure the calumny, blasphemy, rebellion and hateful vitriol of lowly humans without retaliating instantly is the expression of humility in the extreme! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Way of Humility<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Yeshua and his apostles showed us that true humility is not a matter of  play-acting by performatively feigning humility through ostentation or show (Matt 6:16\u201318). Rather, it is a realistic self-appraisal based on truth, and not an inflated view of oneself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as Elohim hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. (Rom 12:3)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

What are the ramifications of true humility? What are its practical applications in every day life? The Bible in many places explains the blessed outworking of true, Bible-based humility. For example, humility involves not<\/em> praising oneself, but praising or lifting others up (instead of self).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. (Phil 2:3)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another. (Rom 12:10)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of Elohim. (Eph 5:21)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for Elohim resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. (1 Pet 5:5)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them, when thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him; and he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room. But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee. For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. (Luke 14:7\u201311)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Biblical humility recognizes that of ourselves we are nothing, inadequate, without dignity and worthless, but because we were created in Elohim\u2019s image, and because Yeshua has redeemed us and is living inside of us, we have infinite dignity, worth as well as the potential to be delivered from our sinful nothingness and to become his redeemed and glorified children (Nelson\u2019s Illustrated Bible Dictionary,<\/em> p. 497).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. (Isa 64:6)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Humility recognizes the fact that we of ourselves, without Elohim\u2019s help, can do nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved? But Yeshua beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with Elohim all things are possible. (Matt 19:25\u201326)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. (John 15:5)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The Biblical Words<\/strong> Humble<\/em><\/strong> or<\/strong> Humility<\/em><\/strong> Defined<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s now take our spiritual magnifying glasses and fine tune our understanding of humility from a biblical perspective. The Hebrew word for humility<\/em> is anav<\/em>, which means \u201cpoor, humble, afflicted, meek, needy, weak or lowly.\u201d According to The Theological Dictionary of the Old Testament<\/em> (or The TWOT<\/em>), the primary definition of anav<\/em> comes from its root, which is the verb anah<\/em> meaning \u201cto force, to try to force submission, to punish, to inflict pain upon.\u201dAnah<\/em> also means \u201cto find oneself in a stunted, humble or lowly position.\u201d What can we learn from this? Attaining humility is an arduous uphill battle for most people, since it goes against everything we want to believe about ourselves. It is not a naturally occurring character trait that we possess. Too often it requires our getting knocked down again and again before we gain a smattering of humility, if even then. Coming to a place of humility often requires being flattened on the road of life by the steam roller of life\u2019s adverse circumstances, which can include suffering, punishment, pain, forced submission and having the wind knocked out of the proverbial sails of our ship of time and time again. Lowliness, contrition and humility are hard won character traits, but in the end the rewards they bring and the value they add to one\u2019s life in the eyes of one\u2019s Creator is priceless. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
