{"id":2372,"date":"2013-02-21T08:27:49","date_gmt":"2013-02-21T16:27:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/?p=2372"},"modified":"2014-08-23T15:44:54","modified_gmt":"2014-08-23T22:44:54","slug":"the-torah-and-testimony-a-stone-of-stumbling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/2013\/02\/21\/the-torah-and-testimony-a-stone-of-stumbling\/","title":{"rendered":"The Torah and Testimony\u2014A Stone of Stumbling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In the following several verses we see an amazing prophecy concerning the two houses of Israel<\/strong> who, generically speaking, have become the modern church and the rabbinic Jews.<\/p>\n<p>Here Isaiah prophesies about the canonization of the Bible into two subdivision\u2014the Torah (or loosely speaking, the Old Testament) and the Testimony (the New Testament). He also predicts that each of these two religious groups (the Jew and he Christians) would spiritually stumble over or have a problem with the identity of the Messiah, who is the Stone of Stumbling and the Rock of Offense. In general, as we shall see, the Christians struggle with the pro-Torah message of the Old Testament (or Word of Elohim), and the Jews reject the message of the New Testament (or Testimony of Yeshua) about the Messiahship of Yeshua.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/2013\/02\/21\/the-torah-and-testimony-a-stone-of-stumbling\/bible-for-the-world\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2373\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2373\" alt=\"Bible for the world\" src=\"http:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Bible-for-the-world-300x245.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Bible-for-the-world-300x245.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Bible-for-the-world-1024x837.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Bible-for-the-world-366x300.jpg 366w, https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Bible-for-the-world.jpg 1271w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Isaiah 8:14\u201315,<i> Stone of stumbling.<\/i><\/strong><i> <\/i>Both houses of Israel (Ephraim and Judah; i.e., the Christian [see notes at Gen 48:14,16] 48: and the Jews) have stumbled over the stone of stumbling, who later on is identified as Yeshua, the Messiah (1 Pet 2:4\u20138; Rom 9:32\u201333; 1 Cor 1:23). The non-believing Jews stumbling over the Messiahship of Yeshua who is the Living Torah-Word of Elohim incarnate (John 1:1,14), while the Christians stumble over the Written Torah, which they claim was abolished and is minimally relevant to them.\u00a0\u00a0This <i>stone of stumbling<\/i>\u00a0is an obvious reference to\u00a0<em id=\"__mceDel\">Yeshua <\/em>who is a stone of stumbling to both houses of Israel (i.e., the non-believing Jews and the Christians.) The Christians stumble over or reject (at least, in part)Yeshua who is the Written Torah-Word of Elohim (John 1:1). The non-believing Jews, on the other hand, reject Yeshua, the Living Torah-Word of Elohim who came in flesh form (John 1:14).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Isaiah 8:16, 20,<i> Bind up the testimony\u2026my disciples.<\/i><\/strong>\u00a0Heb. <i>testimony <\/i>means \u201cconfirmation, attestation.\u201d <\/em>This appears to be a prophecy concerning Yeshua\u2019s disciples, whom he commissioned to \u201cseal the Torah\u201d (loosely speaking, the Old Testament or OT) and add to it the Testimony about him (the New Testament or NT). John seems to be making reference to these two general<em>\u00a0<\/em>subdivisions of the Word of Elohim in the Book of Revelation (Rev 1:2,9; 6:9; 12:17; 14:12).<\/p>\n<p>Here Isaiah is prophesying the canonization of the NT by the disciples of Yeshua (who is mentioned in verse 13). Did you know that the NT\u2019s name for the NT isn\u2019t the NT, but the Testimony of Yeshua\u2014a name that John who finalized the NT canon gave it when he was writing the Book of Revelation? There, he calls the OT or Tanakh the \u201cWord of Elohim\u201d and the NT \u201cthe Testimony of Yeshua\u201d (see Rev 1:2, 9; 6:9; 12:17; 14:12; 20:4).<\/p>\n<p>What do the words <i>bind<\/i> and <i>seal<\/i> signify? The Hebrew for the word <i>bind<\/i> means \u201cto close.\u201d The word <i>seal<\/i> means practically the same \u2014 \u201cto cap off, to enclose.\u201d This is exactly what the apostles did with the message which Yeshua the Stone and Rock (Isa 8:14) gave them. They were to complete it. Bind it up. Close it shut. The authority to perform such an important job may have been reflected in Messiah\u2019s teaching that the apostles had power to \u2018bind on earth\u2019 (Matthew 16:19). The word <i>to bind<\/i> has the significance of <i>authorization<\/i> or <i>giving judgment<\/i>, just as the word <i>unbind<\/i> means \u201cnot to receive or not accept. \u2026\u201d In a word, the apostles felt that they had authority, even from the Old Testament, to bind, seal, authorize and canonize the Law and Testimony of Messiah.
