{"id":2000,"date":"2012-12-24T09:29:36","date_gmt":"2012-12-24T17:29:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/?p=2000"},"modified":"2014-08-23T15:46:59","modified_gmt":"2014-08-23T22:46:59","slug":"2000","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/2012\/12\/24\/2000\/","title":{"rendered":"Shepherds Outstanding in Their Field"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Luke 2:8, <i>Shepherds living out in the fields.<\/i><\/strong> According to the <i>Mishnah <\/i>(a rabbinic Jewish legal-historical document from the end of the second century AD), these were no ordinary sheep or shepherds, but were shepherds who watched over sheep that were destined to become burnt offerings, peace offerings and the Passover offering for the temple service in Jerusalem (<i>Mishnah Sheq <\/i>7:4; <i>The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah<\/i>, by Alfred Edersheim, pp. 132\u2013133).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/2012\/12\/24\/2000\/attachment\/25478487\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2001\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2001\" alt=\"25478487\" src=\"http:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/25478487-247x300.gif\" width=\"247\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Such sheep were kept in the environs of Jerusalem including Bethlehem, which lies just five miles south of that city. These sheep were apparently kept outdoors all year round.<\/p>\n<p>Presumably they were carefully watched over to keep them safe from incurring any blemish that might render them unusable for the temple service.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine the spiritual and prophetic significance of heaven\u2019s angelic messenger revealing to these shepherds the birth in Bethlehem of the spotless and sin-free Lamb of Elohim who was destined to be sacrificed from the beginning of the world (Rev 13:8; John 1:29; 2 Cor 5:21; 1 Pet 2:22; 1 John 3:5). The angel announced that he was YHVH the Messiah (Isa 53:1; Christ the Lord)\u2014the Savior (Luke 2:8 cp.
