{"id":17644,"date":"2020-08-24T06:32:14","date_gmt":"2020-08-24T13:32:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/?p=17644"},"modified":"2020-08-24T06:32:19","modified_gmt":"2020-08-24T13:32:19","slug":"tree-hugging-is-biblical","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/2020\/08\/24\/tree-hugging-is-biblical\/","title":{"rendered":"Tree &#8220;Hugging&#8221; Is Biblical"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3530-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17645\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3530-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3530-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_3530.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Deuteronomy 20:19,<\/strong> <strong><em>Do not destroy its trees.<\/em><\/strong> In its commentary on this passage, <em>A Torah Commentary For Our Times<\/em> states, \u201cWhile the commandment deals specifically with cutting down trees during a siege, Jewish interpreters extend it to cover all forms of wasteful destruction under the principle of <em>bal tashchit<\/em>, or \u2018do not destroy\u2019 \u2026 [all w]asteful destruction is condemned. \u2018Anyone who deliberately breaks dishes, tears clothing, wrecks a building, clogs up a fountain, or wastes food violates the law of <em>bal tashchit<\/em>\u2019\u201d (various rabbinical sources are cite vol. 3, p. 143).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Genesis 2:15, Elohim commissioned Adam and Eve to \u201ctend\/dress and keep the garden.\u201d The word <em>tend <\/em>literally means \u201cto serve, work, dress, labor\u201din the sense of a servant or steward<em>. <\/em>The word <em>keep <\/em>means \u201cto observe, guard, watch over, or preserve.\u201d This was one of Elohim\u2019s first Torah-commands to humans\u2014to take care of or nurture the planet. Gardening is the oldest and noblest profession and was given to man by Elohim. Caring for trees and plants is a major aspect of this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you view yourself as a steward with a divine mandate to help preserve, watch over, and guard all that YHVH has given you responsibility over including your body, your marriage, your children, your gifts and talents, your car, your job, your home and garden and everything else in your life?
