{"id":16893,"date":"2020-05-03T08:42:38","date_gmt":"2020-05-03T15:42:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/?p=16893"},"modified":"2020-05-03T08:42:45","modified_gmt":"2020-05-03T15:42:45","slug":"the-office-of-bishop-explained","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/2020\/05\/03\/the-office-of-bishop-explained\/","title":{"rendered":"The Office of Bishop Explained"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Acts 20:28, <em>Overseers, to shepherd the church.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The word <em>bishop<\/em> is the Greek word<\/strong> \u1f10\u03c0\u03af\u03c3\u03ba\u03bf\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2 (pronounced <em>episkopos<\/em>) and means \u201can overseer, patron, one who watches or protects, one who cares for others, a man charged with the duty of seeing that things to be done by others are done rightly, any curator, guardian or superintendent; the superintendent, elder, or overseer of a Christian church\u201d (<em>TDNT, <\/em>vol. 2, p. 608). This word or related cognates occur only several times in the NT (Luke 19:44; Acts 1:20; 1 Tim 3:1, 2; 2 Tim 4:22; Tit 1:7; 3:15; 1 Pet 2:12, 25).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Church-Father1-16959449-699x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16894\" width=\"270\" height=\"409\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yeshua is the Chief Shepherd and Bishop over his people (1 Pet 2:25), with those holding those earthly offices under his authority.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <em>TDNT<\/em> notes that the role of the <em>episkopos<\/em> is to strengthen that of the pastor in watching over the flock (e.g. Acts 20:28; 1 Pet 5:2). The NT with regard to the congregation in Ephesus seems to equates the <em>episkopos<\/em> with the <em>presbuteros <\/em>(or elders-leaders of a congregation, see Acts 20:28) indicating that there is more than one leader or overseer over a congregation\u2014literally, a group of leader-elders. Elders (<em>presbuteros<\/em>), pastors (<em>poimen<\/em>) and bishops (<em>episkopos<\/em>) are again viewed as equivalent in regards to local leadership in 1 Peter 5:1 and 2. In this passage, the leadership terms are in the plural, thus not indicating a central lead figure <em>per se<\/em> although it is the scriptural norm from the time of the patriarchs, through the priesthood, judges and kings of Israel to have a human who exercises ultimate authority.
