{"id":11758,"date":"2017-12-25T09:38:32","date_gmt":"2017-12-25T17:38:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/?p=11758"},"modified":"2017-12-25T09:38:32","modified_gmt":"2017-12-25T17:38:32","slug":"feeding-trough-manger-sukkah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/2017\/12\/25\/feeding-trough-manger-sukkah\/","title":{"rendered":"A Feeding Trough, Manger or Sukkah?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/2017\/12\/25\/feeding-trough-manger-sukkah\/christmas-nativity-scene-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11759\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11759\" src=\"https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Manger-Succah.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"5000\" height=\"3513\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Manger-Succah.jpg 5000w, https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Manger-Succah-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Manger-Succah-768x540.jpg 768w, https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Manger-Succah-1024x719.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Manger-Succah-427x300.jpg 427w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 5000px) 100vw, 5000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Luke 2:7, <i>Manger. <\/i>(Gr. <em>phatne<\/em>)<i> <\/i><\/b>The Greek word<i> phatne<\/i> literally means \u201cfeeding trough\u201d and according to the word\u2019s etymology and lexicology as stated in <i>The<\/i> <i>TDNT<\/i>, there is no indication that this manger is anything but a standard feeding trough or manger.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, this manger may have been a <i>sukkah<\/i> or tabernacle, which is the flimsy little hut that Israelites build during the biblical Feast of Tabernacles (Heb. <i>Chag Sukkot<\/i>) as commanded in the Torah (Lev 23:33\u201343)<i>. <\/i>We see the connection between a manger and a <i>sukkah <\/i>in Genesis 33:17 where Jacob built booths (or tabernacles; Heb. <i>succot or sukkot<\/i> is the plural form of <i>sukkah<\/i>) for his livestock showing us that the Hebrew word <i>sukkah <\/i>(pl. <i>sukkot<\/i>) can also mean \u201clivestock barn or manger\u201d as well as a temporary habitation where Israelites dwell during the biblically commanded festival of <i>Sukkot<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>This raises the possibility that Yeshua was born in a festival <i>sukkah<\/i> during the Feast of Tabernacles or <i>Sukkot<\/i> and not just in an animal barn as Christian folklore would have us believe.<\/p>\n<p>The LXX Greek word for <i>sukkah<\/i> in Gen 33:17 is <i>skenas <\/i>meaning \u201chabitation, dwelling or tabernacle\u201d and is the same word used in John 1:14 and Rev 21:1\u20133 in reference to Yeshua tabernacling with his people.<\/p>\n<p>Putting all the pieces together, Yeshua may have been born in a <i>sukkah<\/i>-manger prior to or during the Feast of Tabernacles with a human <i>sukkah<\/i> (or body, of which the physical <i>sukkah<\/i> during Sukkot is a metaphorical picture) in order to redeem man from sin, so that Yeshua might tabernacle with redeemed men forever in the New Jerusalem (Rev 21:3).<\/p>\n<div class=\"evernoteSiteMemory\"><a href=\"javascript:\" onclick=\"Evernote.doClip({title: 'A Feeding Trough, Manger or Sukkah?',url: 'https:\/\/hoshanarabbah.org\/blog\/2017\/12\/25\/feeding-trough-manger-sukkah\/',contentID: 'post-11758',suggestTags: 'Christ,Christmas,Feast of Tabernacles,Jesus,Manger,Messiah,Nativity,Succot,Sukkah,Sukkot,Yeshua',providerName: 'Hoshana Rabbah Blog',styling: 'text' });return false\" class=\"evernoteSiteMemoryLink\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.evernote.com\/article-clipper.png\" \nclass=\"evernoteSiteMemoryButton\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/a>\t\t\t\t<div class=\"evernoteSiteMemoryClear\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Luke 2:7, Manger.
