Why I wouldn’t make that homosexual “wedding” cake

We have all heard about the Christian cake makers who refuse to bake and decorate wedding cakes for homosexuals wanting to get “married.” There are also the wedding photographers who refuse to photograph a homosexual “wedding,” and the print shops who refuses to produce and print the wedding invitation for same. These business owners are either vilified or lauded, depending on which side of the homosexual rights issue you fall.

Wedding Cake.001

Many years ago, it wasn’t uncommon to see a sign posted in a retail business that said, “We reserve the right to refuse business to anyone.” Remember those days? After all, it seems reasonable that if you’re the owner of a business you can choose who you want and don’t want to do business with. Right? Wrong! Welcome to the brave new world of our 21st century post-Christian society! just trying refusing doing business with a homosexual who demands that you bake them a wedding cake. You’re likely to have the state penalize you with fines for “discrimination” and try to force you to bake that cake against your will. As a small business owner myself for nearly 30 years, I find this impossible to imagine. I started my business so that I could be the captain of my own ship without having to compromise my deeply held spiritual, biblical values. I consciously chose not to go into the corporate world because serving and obeying YHVH was more important to me than prostituting my values to the god of mammon. Now the state tells me that I have to do something that goes against my biblical beliefs or be punished. Can anyone say “religious persecution”?

Let me be perfectly clear where I draw the line. As a full time secular business owner-operator, I’m not against doing business with homosexuals or anyone else. I have a number of clients who are homosexual — some of whom I have been working with for years. It’s really quite simple: I perform them service and they pay me. As a condition for my working for them, they’re not asking me to condone their lifestyle — one which the Bible calls abominable. Where I draw the line is if my working for them someone implies that I am lending support, or showing agreement with their unrighteous lifestyle. This I couldn’t do. In my opinion, when you bake a wedding cake for a homosexual couple, you’re showing tacit agreement with the idea that homosexuals can marry, which according to the Bible is not only impossible, but abominable.

Furthermore, as a Bible believer, were I to bake that cake, word likely would get out in the homosexual community that I was baking cakes resulting in more business for me. What kind of spiritual signal would this send into the homosexual world? That the Bible condones homosexual “weddings?” Sorry, but I don’t want any part of this! Truthfully, I prefer the praises of YHVH Elohim over the praises of men.

So I stand with the Christian cake decorators who, because of their biblical beliefs, refuse to bake  cakes for the homosexual “weddings.” But what are the biblical reasons for this refusal? Is there a command in the Bible that says, “Thou shalt not bake a cake for a homosexual “wedding.” Of course not. But just because there’s no explicit command doesn’t mean the Bible does’t have something to say about it. After all, there’s no explicit command in the Bible against the use of illicit drugs, yet we all know that this is something that goes against biblical values. Here are the biblical reasons why I wouldn’t bake that cake.

  • The Bible is clear. YHVH Elohim is the Author of biblical marriage, which he sanctifies as a holy union between a man and a woman for the purpose of procreation. The idea of marriage between same sex couples doesn’t fit the biblical definition of marriage, and is, therefore, not marriage.  The Bible calls homosexuality an abomination (Lev 18:22) and those who refuse to repent of such practices won’t inherit the kingdom of Elohim (1 Cor 6:9).
  • Yeshua the Messiah is Elohim and is the Creator of all things including marriage (John 1:1–5). Followers of Yeshua are to have the mind of Messiah and to be like him in character, word, thought and deed — and eventually, in spiritual substance (Phil 2:5; Rom 8:29; 13:14; 15:5; 1 Cor 11:1; 15:49; 2 Cor 3:18; 1 Pet 2:21; 4:1; 1 John 2:6; 3:2).
  • Followers of Yeshua are to abstain from every appearances or form of evil (1 Thess 5:22).

In summary, to bake a cake for homosexual couple’s “wedding” violates the God-ordained sanctity of marriage and is tacitly acquiescing to the attempt to legitimize the concept of  homosexual “marriage,” which is only a demonic counterfeit of the real thing. This is contrary to the Bible, to Elohim’s intent for marriage and his views on homosexuality. For a follower of Yeshua to be involved in such an activity isn’t copacetic to the mind, will or character of Yeshua. Not only that, involvement in a homosexual “wedding” is an appearance of evil — something a follower of Yeshua needs to stay far away from.

For these reasons, I wouldn’t bake the cake.

But here is what I’d do instead:

If I owned a cake decorating shop, I would cease making wedding cakes (in order not to violate the laws of the land mandating that I bake  “wedding” cakes for homosexuals), and, instead, I would become the best donut or bagel shop in the city. Not only that, I would find a good Bible-based homosexual outreach and recovery ministry and make my cake shop available free-of-charge for their use after hours.

  1. I agree. And it’s time we quit compromising with the world and say what Elohim’s word says. Not what is politically correct and not what makes us money.

  2. Those who have a business that caters to any the the Gentile holidays would also have a rough time honoring YHVH…. not to serve (worship)other gods, even the appearance can be a stumbling block.
When one chooses to follow YHVH– fully, it is a very narrow path in so many ways. And very lonely and isolated, my biggest concern is for my son, having to attend public school and stand alone as well. Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?
